The automotive alternator is a critical component of a vehicle’s electrical system. It serves two primary functions: supplying power to various electrical components and charging the battery. To ensure the alternator maintains a steady output while the vehicle is in motion, the following maintenance tasks should be performed regularly.
1. After the vehicle has traveled a certain distance, adjust the tension of the alternator belt as needed and tighten the adjustment screws accordingly. The mounting screws on the alternator bracket should be kept at an appropriate tightness.
2. Check the bearings for wear. If insufficient lubrication is detected, apply a few drops of engine oil through the grease nipple. Be careful not to allow oil to seep into the rectifier, as this will impair power transmission.
3. If the rectifier is covered with deposits, polish it with fine sandpaper.
4. If the brush contact surfaces are uneven, smooth them with fine sandpaper. Replace the brushes with new ones if the springs have lost their elasticity or the brushes are excessively worn. If the brushes are too short but undamaged, insert shims into the holder to ensure a tight seal against the rectifier.
5. If the insulator on the brush holder is damaged, replace it with a new one.
6. If the terminals on the automotive alternator are loose, they must be tightened immediately. If insulation is poor, the alternator should be disassembled and repaired.
7. If the automotive alternator fails while driving and the destination is not too far away, disconnect the wire running from the magnetic field coil to the voltage regulator. For a three-brush alternator, remove the third brush to prevent the alternator from generating electricity. Power the vehicle using the battery, and conserve power as much as possible during this time.
8. The dust seal on the alternator must be securely in place and should not be removed, to prevent dust from entering the interior and causing mechanical failure.
9. Clean all wires regularly and keep them dry to prevent electrical leakage.
